Inside a Ransom Exchange With Somali Pirates

The most unnerving moment came not during a firefight but in the minutes before one, when Dave Leaning, a former Royal Marine turned private security contractor, was kneeling in front of his boss—a legendary former commander of UK special forces—strapping an ankle holster onto him before he boarded a skiff to negotiate with Somali pirates. Leaning started whistling Bob Marley's "Stir It Up." His boss, the Colonel, picked up the lyrics. Soon the entire bridge crew was singing along. "It just broke the tension," Leaning recalls. He spent a summer diving in Gibraltar, then skied the length of Norway for 122 days, then dove in Greece. Looking for a new challenge, he cold-called the Colonel, the former commandant of the Commando Training Centre who had pinned Leaning's Green Beret on him years earlier. Leaning wanted to join his anti-poaching operation in East Africa.
