How to Invent and Invest In the Future with Josh Wolfe

Josh Wolfe, co-founder of Lux Capital, grew up in a one-bathroom apartment in Coney Island, Brooklyn, with his mother, grandmother, and grandfather. His grandmother was a meter maid, his grandfather a night delivery man for the Daily News. His parents split when he was two and a half. He was bitter and envious of people with nuclear families, resentful of his absent father. That combination of confidence and insecurity—"chips on shoulders put chips in pockets"—became the engine of his career.

"I have always been competitive," Wolfe says. "The confidence at times was I would see other people who either had more materially or stability... I would look at them and say, wait a second, they're not smart or they're not smarter than me." The insecurity came from the same place: being short, not having money, the broken family. He believes society benefits from people plagued by these things. "Woe to the Bay Area adherent to mindfulness and meditation, to find calm and peace. We don't get peace from progress. You need tons of disaffected individuals that are super bitter with something to prove."
