Brainstorming AI Startup Ideas with Kevin Rose

Podcast: The Startup Ideas Podcast
Guest: Kevin Rose (founder of Digg, partner at True Ventures)

The cold truth about startups, Kevin Rose says, is that nine out of ten go to zero. But the thing that turns him off most when an entrepreneur pitches is leading with market size and revenue opportunity—making it clear they're in it for the money. "If you don't love the idea, if it's not something that you wake up and jump out of bed in the morning thinking about, then you're just gonna get burnt out."

Rose has been an idea machine for two decades. He launched Digg in 2004 after lying in bed thinking: "No one is like voting online. And if you could have a way that you could vote and the best stuff would rise to the top." That idea—using asynchronous JavaScript to dynamically update a number on screen—eventually became the like button. Digg grew to 38 million monthly uniques before Facebook introduced the like button about a year later. Rose surrenders to it: "That idea lived on."
