The Faceless Detective

A mannequin in a fedora and suit jacket stands over a corpse in a Foundation interrogation room. The victim is Dr. Agnes—female, mid-thirties, blunt force trauma to the right temple. The detective notes the angle of the blow suggests the killer was roughly the same height as the deceased. His human handlers, Agents Hortense and Roxbury, are not impressed. They already know all of this. They want something they don't know.

The detective is SCP-5147-12, an animated mannequin with no eyes, no mouth, and no clear mechanism for how he speaks or perceives the world. He was awakened by the Foundation specifically to assist with a murder investigation. He smokes cigarettes he cannot inhale, wears a hat he constantly tips, and refers to himself simply as "the detective." His handlers tolerate him because he is good at his job.

The Second Body and the Cotton Candy Smell

Hortense leads the detective to a second crime scene: the office of Dr. Whitaker. But the detective refuses to enter. He says something feels wrong—there is a smell of cotton candy in the room, which he identifies as the scent of dietary ketosis associated with Dr. Gavin, a Foundation researcher who has been dead for two years. Hortense dismisses this. Dead men do not leave fresh smells.
