The dead squirrel skull crunches under the front tire of the unmarked black sedan, sending shards and dust across the cracked asphalt of a street that hasn't seen maintenance in decades. Agents Denny and Crawford have pulled up to a Foundation outpost in Centralia, Pennsylvania—a town that officially has five residents but is best known for the coal seam fire that has been burning beneath it since 1962. The outpost looks like an abandoned house, which is the point. But their contact, Agent Lincoln, hasn't reported in over a week. When they finally breach the locked door, bypassing a keypad that refuses their code, they find Lincoln suspended in the bathroom by his own flayed skin, the floor beneath him crumbling into an open chasm. Below, the coal smoke rises thick, and from the hole comes the sound of grunts, then howls, then screams. The entities designated SCP-2003-1—the former citizens of Centralia, now trapped in the mine and regenerating from any injury—are coming up.
