A man named Dodson is serving a life sentence in a prison facility that seems more like a clinic than a penitentiary. He has already killed two inmates. The first, a man named Beck, he stabbed to death with a shank—even after Beck was unconscious, according to the guards. The second, Lemus—a gang leader with lips that reminded Dodson of earthworms—he choked to death with his own handcuffs, right in front of Dr. Orton, the prison therapist. Dodson claims self-defense both times. But the pattern is hard to miss.

Dr. Orton is not fooled. During a session, she asks Dodson what he fears most. He says nothing comes to mind. She presses him on his time in Cincinnati between 2016 and 2022. Something shifts in his composure. She stands, leads him to a small room she keeps locked, and tells him to sit. The room contains a single chair and a tan plastic shower curtain stretched along one wall. She gives him a drink. Then she leaves, locks the door, and speaks to him through a hidden speaker.
