The Three Skull Types That Define Amniote Evolution

The classification hinges on the number of temporal fenestrae, or openings on the sides of the skull behind the eye socket.
Anapsids have no such openings. These are the parareptiles, which dominated Permian ecosystems but are now entirely extinct. Synapsids have one low opening — this is the mammalian lineage, meaning humans are synapsids. Diapsids have two openings, one above the other, and constitute the reptilian lineage, including birds, crocodiles, turtles, snakes, and lizards.
