Anthony Scaramucci has built a career on public failure and private recovery. He failed the bar exam twice, got fired from Goldman Sachs, nearly lost his hedge fund in the 2008 crisis, and was infamously fired as White House communications director after eleven days. In conversation with Katy Kay, he walks through what those moments actually felt like—not the polished retrospective version, but the panic, the humiliation, and the slow, deliberate work of rebuilding.

The Goldman Firing and the $40 in Quarters

Scaramucci's first major professional blow came in 1991, when Goldman Sachs fired him on a Friday afternoon. He was 27, had no savings, and was told by the partner who let him go that he was "an experiment" that hadn't worked. "The only thing about you that fits in here is that you went to Harvard," the partner told him. "Everything else about you doesn't fit in."

The next morning, Scaramucci went to the bank and withdrew four rolls of quarters—$40 worth. He didn't have a cell phone. He spent the weekend in Grand Central Station, using payphones to call anyone who might know of a job opening. A friend eventually told him about a sales position back at Goldman on the 29th floor. He called his old boss, asked for a reference, and took a 40% pay cut to get rehired.
