The Reverend Ian Paisley's voice booms from a 1965 sermon: "We pray for a great smashing of the chains of apostasy in this land." To anyone under forty, it sounds like a stroke. To anyone who grew up in 1970s Northern Ireland, it was unmistakable. Paisley was the voice of hardline Protestant Ulster fundamentalism, the sworn foe of the Church of Rome, and a man who sounded like he had stepped out of the sixteenth century. The astonishing thing is that he made that recording in 1965—the year Help! was released, London was swinging, miniskirts were appearing, and NASA was preparing to send a mission to the moon. Paisley was not groovy. But for four decades, his was one of the most identifiable voices of a conflict that claimed thousands of lives, including almost 2,000 entirely innocent civilians.
The Partition That Wouldn't Wither
The conflict called the Troubles—a euphemistic name for one of the darkest episodes in modern British and Irish history—did not explode out of nowhere. Where you start the story is itself a political choice. Irish nationalists would begin with the Normans arriving in Ireland, or with Elizabeth I, Oliver Cromwell, or the Plantation of Ulster. But a sensible compromise picks up in the early twentieth century.
