The Odyssey does not begin with the fall of Troy or with Odysseus's adventures. It begins with Athena, goddess of wisdom, standing before her father Zeus and arguing for the rescue of a hero who has been trapped for seven years on a mysterious island called Ogygia, held as the sex slave of the nymph Calypso. Odysseus, the wiliest of the Greek heroes who devised the Trojan Horse, has lost all his ships and all his men. The Two-Pronged Strategy
Athena's plan has two parts. First, she persuades Zeus to send Hermes to Ogygia to order Calypso to release Odysseus. Second, she herself will travel to Ithaca, Odysseus's home island, to visit his son Telemachus. The timing is deliberate: Poseidon, the god of the sea who hates Odysseus for blinding his son Polyphemus, is away visiting the Ethiopians, giving Athena her window.
