So the baby was named Philip—a name as incongruous for an English Protestant as an anti-communist American politician being called Vladimir. By 1572, at seventeen, Sidney was in Paris staying with Francis Walsingham, the English ambassador, and witnessed the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre.
