Born in 1830, Franz Joseph was the Habsburg dynasty distilled into human form: pious, stubborn, obsessed with protocol and uniforms. He rose at five every morning, ate boiled beef alone for lunch, and wrote letters to his runaway wife. When told his brother Maximilian had been executed by firing squad in Mexico, Franz Joseph reportedly said, "What a shame. He was an excellent huntsman, and we will miss him at our next shoot. However, we may still look forward to good sport."
