In May 1951, Kim Philby, MI6’s head of station in Washington, learned that Donald Maclean—a fellow Cambridge spy and Soviet agent—was about to be arrested. Philby had been watching the investigation close in for months, and he knew that if Maclean broke under questioning, the trail could lead directly back to him. The solution required a messenger, and the only person Philby trusted for the job was Guy Burgess, the chaotic, drunken houseguest then living in Philby’s basement. What followed was one of the most consequential spy escapes of the Cold War—and one that would nearly destroy Philby in the process.

The Venona Problem

The threat to Philby came from an operation so secret that even President Truman was not told about it. During World War II, American codebreakers had intercepted thousands of encrypted Soviet diplomatic cables. The Soviets used one-time pads, a theoretically unbreakable cipher—provided the pads were never reused. But the Americans discovered that the Soviets had made a printing error and reused some pads, giving the codebreakers a narrow opening. The resulting decryption project, codenamed Venona, was painstakingly slow. Analysts at Arlington Hall worked by hand to recover fragments of messages: a code name here, a reference to a meeting place there. Each fragment required detective work to match to a real person.

  • 3 (08:51) **Philby’s Unbelievable Access to the Hunt** - Despite the secrecy, Philby is brought into the Venona project because it’s a joint operation and some leads point to British sources, meaning he literally stands over the shoulder of the lead codebreaker.

  • 5 (14:36) **Donald Maclean’s Spectacular Crack-Up** - Maclean, the golden boy of the Foreign Office and a committed Marxist ideologue, begins to self-destruct under the pressure of his double life, engaging in violent, drunken, and erratic behavior.
  • 6 (19:10) **The Decisive Venona Breakthrough** - By spring 1951, a new Venona decrypt provides a specific biographical detail: Homer’s pregnant wife was staying with her mother in New York, which points directly at Maclean.
  • 7 (22:16) **The Fateful Decision: Guy Burgess as Courier** - Philby decides to use the erratic Guy Burgess to get a warning to Maclean, a choice that will prove catastrophic for the spy ring.
