On August 4th, at 11:30 PM, a bus driver at Leipzig/Halle Airport in East Germany spotted something lying on the ground inside the secured apron area near the southern runway. He walked up to it and kicked it. It hadn't been spotted by any airport security systems. When a bomb disposal robot examined it, the object turned out to be a drone about the size of a microwave oven—a commercially available FPV quadcopter—stripped of some lights and carrying six to eight hundred grams of military-grade Semtex explosives in what looked like a vegetable can attached to a mount. The drone had come in low, avoiding radar, and struck the wing tank area of a parked Antonov Ukrainian cargo aircraft. The detonator failed on impact. But that Antonov was fueled with 25,000 liters of kerosene. German security officials later said that had the drone detonated, the explosion would have destroyed a significant piece of the airport itself.
This near-miss is one of several incidents in August and September 2024 that have led Western intelligence officials to believe Russia is escalating its covert campaign against Europe in ways that could spiral dangerously out of control.
