AI Summary
5 min readWhy People Are Losing Faith in Healthcare
David Ricks, chair and CEO of Eli Lilly, joined Scott Galloway to discuss why his company became the first healthcare firm to reach a trillion-dollar valuation, the real promise and limits of GLP-1 drugs, and why Americans are increasingly turning to unregulated peptides as a symptom of a broken healthcare system.
Lilly was founded 150 years ago by a Civil War colonel who was a pharmacist. He saw soldiers dying from infections and terrible medical care, so he created a company that did something novel: list every ingredient on the bottle and sign each bottle himself. Every product Lilly makes eventually goes off patent and revenue goes to zero, so the company has had to reinvent itself repeatedly. The current reinvention centers on GLP-1 therapies, which have made Lilly the first healthcare company to reach a trillion-dollar valuation.
