War on the Young: A Generation Sacrificed for the Incumbents

Scott Galloway’s TED 2024 talk, republished on his podcast, makes a single, uncomfortable argument: American society has broken its foundational promise to young people. The social contract that bound generations—work hard, play by the rules, and you’ll be better off than your parents—no longer holds. And the cohorts who benefited most from the post-war boom have pulled the ladder up behind them.

The Numbers That Prove the Break

Galloway opens with a stark comparison. In 1989, adults under 40 held 12% of household wealth, while those over 70 held 19%. Today, those under 40 command just 7% of household wealth, while those over 70 control 30%. The transfer is not accidental. It is structural.

Real median income from labor is up 40% since 1974, while the S&P 500 is up dramatically more. The tax code favors gains from ownership—capital gains, real estate appreciation—over income from work. Gains from stock sales are taxed at lower rates. Real estate holdings can appreciate tax-free, and gains can be rolled into another investment. Galloway calls this a series of transfers of wealth from earners (the young) to owners (the old).
