How the Ceasefire Came Together — and Why It's Already Unraveling

New reporting from Axios reveals that the breakthrough came when Iran's Supreme Leader Mokhtab Khamenei personally stepped in and authorized his negotiators to move toward a deal. Up until that point, Iran had been holding firm. But facing the real prospect of a massive U.S. bombing campaign — with Pentagon officials making final calculations, regional allies bracing for retaliation, and civilians reportedly fleeing major Iranian cities — Khamenei reportedly gave the green light, something sources described as a "breakthrough."

There's a significant caveat, however. Conflicting reports from the Times of London suggest Khamenei may be incapacitated and unable to directly participate in decision-making. If true, that raises the possibility the green light came through intermediaries acting on his behalf. Nobody fully knows.
