What Cancer Actually Is
Cancer is not one disease. It is a disease of a single cell that can no longer respond to signals telling it to stop growing. Normally, when you cut your hand, wound cells grow back into the wound and then stop. In cancer, those stop signals fail. Genetic mutations produce proteins that cannot receive the "stop growing" instruction, so the cell keeps dividing, forming masses, invading bone and blood, and metastasizing to organs where it has no business being.
But that simple description understates the problem. Cancer cells also hijack other signals that allow them to move, colonize new organs, and survive in hostile environments. It is a cell gone awry in multiple ways at once.
