The Observer Effect and the Hungry Ocean

The first story, by John Andrew Henderson, begins with a family fleeing their home at dawn. The mother wakes her children by throwing a TV through the window. No time to dress, no time to ask questions — just get in the car. The father, a government researcher in quantum physics, has called with instructions: drive to a remote summer camp, stay outside, and do not enter any enclosed space. The family and their neighbors, the Vosses, obey. But the caretaker of the camp does not. He walks into the reception building and is never seen again — the building transforms into a seamless plastic lump, with a two-dimensional image of his screaming face painted on the window.
