Rob Dial opens with a confession: for the first 35 years of his life, he mistook a low-grade hum of dissatisfaction for ambition. That feeling of not yet that drives so many high achievers—the sense that you can't settle, can't enjoy where you are, must keep pushing—is not actually ambition. It's something else entirely, and it runs on a different neurological system than the one that lets you feel satisfaction.
The key insight comes from neuroscientist Kent Berridge at the University of Michigan, who spent his career studying one question: are wanting and liking the same thing? Before his research, everyone assumed yes—you want something because you like it. Berridge found they run on two completely separate brain systems. Wanting runs on dopamine, which is "big, loud, spread across many regions." Liking and enjoying run on completely different chemistry, concentrated in tiny clusters called hedonic hotspots. Most people spend years strengthening the wanting system while letting the enjoying system atrophy. "It's like being a bodybuilder with massive arms and teeny tiny toothpick legs," Dial says. "You wonder why you can't stand up."
