5 min readAt 49, Chip Conley spent a weekend with his sons, ages 14 and 11, in Houston. He knows he will not get to do adolescence over again with them. That awareness—"10 years from now, what will you regret if you don't move it or do it now?"—is the engine of his current purpose portfolio. Conley, founder of the Modern Elder Academy (MEA), has spent the last year running a nine-month Purpose Fellowship with two cohorts of 28 people each. The experience has shifted his own thinking about what purpose is and how adults actually find it.
Purpose Is a Verb, Not a Possession
Conley argues that American culture treats purpose as a noun—a possession, like a BMW in the driveway. "You can't get the noun unless you do the verb," he says. "The verb is being purposeful." He dismantles the myth of the singular purpose: people do not have one purpose for life. Instead, they have a "purpose portfolio" made up of big-P purposes (career, parenting) and small-p purposes (learning guitar, building a dog park). As people age, they gain "time affluence"—more spaciousness—which allows them to cultivate many small purposes. "Don't discount the small Ps," Conley says. "The little peas are what make you unique."
