The Pilot, the Providence, and the Slow Descent Into Evil

Michael Knowles opens with a story that sounds like an action movie but isn't: an Omani Muslim pilot on a Fly Dubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv stabbed his Indian co-pilot mid-flight and tried to take down the plane with 174 people aboard, including 27 children. The cockpit was locked—post-9/11 security meant passengers couldn't get in. But the stabbed co-pilot, Captain Smith Makkar, managed to open the cockpit door just before passing out. Israeli passengers rushed in, subdued the terrorist pilot, and reserve crew members who happened to be on board stabilized the plane. They landed safely in Saudi Arabia. Knowles calls this a "providential" event—a narrowly averted catastrophe that could have expanded the Middle Eastern war dramatically.

6 Standout Quotes
7 "Had this gone down, 174 people killed on this flight to Tel Aviv in a Middle East that's already at war. This could have vastly expanded the war... And we avoided it. And you rarely, you pray to God that bad things don't happen. You're angry with God when bad things do happen. We generally don't thank God that much when really bad things are narrowly averted."
