The Honest Dishonesty of a Republican Welfare Ad

A Republican campaign ad from Arkansas Governor Sarah Sanders features a young white man named Brad who has "turned relaxing into a full-time profession" while hardworking taxpayers fund his welfare benefits. The ad is meant to rally support for work requirements. Yet SNAP benefits in the state are used by about 21% black recipients and 11% Hispanic recipients, meaning both groups are overrepresented relative to their share of the population. White recipients are underrepresented. Medicaid numbers tell the same story. Women use welfare programs at higher rates than men. The single demographic least likely to abuse welfare is young white men—exactly the group the ad targets.
