The Pope’s recent visit to France was not a diplomatic exercise in soft power or interfaith outreach. It was a direct confrontation with the core tenets of modern liberalism—assisted suicide, abortion, and the legacy of the French Revolution itself. He called it “the temptation to cause death under the guise of false compassion,” insisting that no human law can strip a person of their inherent dignity. This is a rejection of legal positivism—the idea that a legislature’s stamp of approval makes an act licit. The Pope argued that the state’s role is not to redefine evil as compassion, and that the intentional killing of the innocent can never be treated as routine.
