Barack Obama recently said that if women ran every government for just two years, things would be better. Michael Knowles argues this is not just wrong, but reveals a deeper liberal habit of mind: seeing how the world is and assuming the opposite would be an improvement. The episode uses this claim as a launching point to examine why socialism is surging in polling, why Republicans are losing young men in the midterms, and why the Iran war is a losing issue for the GOP — all while offering a traditionalist conservative critique of meritocracy, crony capitalism, and the failures of both parties.

Knowles frames Obama’s comment as a classic example of liberal thinking: discontent with the present leads to a reflexive desire to invert it. “The liberals look at the world and they say, well, the world sucks. I'm unhappy with the world. I want to change the world. So everything that is should be the opposite. It should be opposite day. That's what that's basically liberal politics.” The conservative alternative, he says, is to look at how things have always been and ask why — with curiosity and humility rather than resentment.
