The Fraud That Fits the Age

Elizabeth Holmes is going to prison for eleven years. In the days before she reports, she invites a documentary filmmaker to spend every moment with her. The result is You Can See Everything, a film that has a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and whose trailer drew over three million views in fourteen hours. Michael Knowles argues that the fascination is not really about Holmes herself—it is about what she perfectly embodies.

Knowles draws a sharp distinction between Holmes and other famous fraudsters. Bernie Madoff was a con man who could have existed in any era. Holmes is different. She is a tech founder, a woman, a "girl boss" who built a company instead of a family. She charmed Henry Kissinger, George Shultz, and Jim Mattis onto her board. And the culture that produced her—the teachers, parents, and pop culture that told young women they must become founders and entrepreneurs and put off having children—was itself a fraud.
