How They Legally Killed An 83-Year-Old Grandmother

An 83-year-old grandmother with dementia, living in an assisted living facility in Canada, was euthanized against her will. Two days before her death, her granddaughter told her what was going to happen. The grandmother sobbed for 45 minutes, saying "I've made a mistake." She repeatedly ripped out the IV needle, screaming "I don't want the death shot." She was killed anyway. She died covered in blood, with her hands clasped in prayer.

Michael Knowles argues that the central mechanism enabling this killing is euphemism. "Euthanasia" literally means "good death" — the same prefix as "euphoria" or "eulogy." Historically, a good death meant one you could prepare for: confess your sins, put your affairs in order, die in friendship with God. Now the term has been inverted to mean suicide, which Knowles calls "the ultimate act of despair." And it has been inverted again to mean murder — killing someone against their will.
