Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy went on Piers Morgan’s show and directly accused Donald Trump and Elon Musk of betraying Ukraine. The immediate trigger was a sudden restriction placed on the Starlink-based military system Ukraine depends on for its drone operations. Zelenskyy’s message was blunt: “People will die because of this decision.”

The Starlink Speed Cap and Its Consequences

The episode centers on a specific, recent event. Without prior notice to Ukraine, a speed limit was imposed on the military version of SpaceX’s Starlink system, called Star Shield. Ukraine relies on this system to control its drones for both striking targets inside Russia and intercepting incoming Russian drones and missiles. The cap severely limited the speed of these drones—some were restricted to under 100 miles per hour, others to around 50 miles per hour. This made it impossible for Ukraine to carry out missions inside Russia and, critically, prevented it from intercepting Russian drone strikes. Zelenskyy stated on the program that the decision would result in “a lot of losses” and that “people are dying because of this decision.”
