Ukraine Strikes Deep Into Russia as Trump Pushes Both-Sides Narrative at UN

The war in Ukraine is escalating on multiple fronts, with Ukrainian forces destroying 45% of Russia's refinery capacity while Russian drones and missiles pounded Kyiv's gas stations and energy infrastructure. This came as Donald Trump, meeting Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, framed the conflict as a both-sides problem and expressed more concern about rising diesel prices than about Ukrainian casualties.

Zelensky's Message: "Our Lives Are More Important Than the Price of Diesel"

In a Wall Street Journal interview, Zelensky delivered a pointed rebuke to Trump's focus on fuel costs. "Our lives are more important than the price of energy," Zelensky said. He made clear that if the international community wants to help with diesel prices, it should help Ukraine stop Russian attacks on its civil infrastructure — water supplies, power grids, and heating systems.

Zelensky also directly challenged Trump's 2024 campaign promise to end the war in 24 hours. Trump had claimed he possessed the best words and could convince everyone to make peace. Instead, Zelensky implied, Trump made deranged social media posts — not actual peace deals. The Ukrainian president's message was blunt: stop whining about diesel prices while Russian missiles are killing civilians.
