The Death of a Whistleblower and the Fight Over Epstein Documents

On August 9, 2026, Simon Andres posted a message on X introducing himself: "I am the British whistleblower." The 57-year-old former banker detailed how he had reported evidence concerning Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's links to Jeffrey Epstein to the FBI in 2020 and 2021, shared evidence with the House Oversight Committee, and contributed to regulatory action including a £96 million HMRC tax assessment. He ended by inviting followers to connect with him on X or LinkedIn. Weeks later, Andres was found dead, reportedly by suicide.

Patrick Howley, who worked with Andres as part of a transparency group, posted: "Simon has been found dead, reportedly from suicide. Rest in peace to Simon and to all the whistleblowers who have died too young. The truth about Lutnick will never die."

Andres had spent 35 years in financial markets, serving as an executive at BGC Partners—a firm spun off from Cantor Fitzgerald, where Howard Lutnick was CEO and controlling stakeholder. After leaving BGC in January 2017, Andres became a whistleblower, unearthing evidence of a years-long business relationship between Lutnick and Epstein through a company called Adfin. The key documents included a 2018 email exchange in which Lutnick and Epstein discussed the company directly.
