Trump Extends Iran Ceasefire Unilaterally as Tehran Refuses Talks

The United States has unilaterally extended its ceasefire with Iran without a new deadline, after Tehran refused to attend negotiations in Islamabad as long as the U.S. naval blockade of the Persian Gulf remains in place. The development marks a significant reversal for the Trump administration, which had spent weeks threatening military action and setting hard deadlines that Iran simply ignored.

The Collapse of Negotiations

The ceasefire, originally brokered by Pakistan, was set to expire within hours when Donald Trump posted a statement extending it indefinitely. Trump blamed Iran for being "seriously fractured" and claimed the extension came at the request of Pakistani mediators. But Iranian officials immediately pushed back, stating they never requested an extension and that the 10-point framework they proposed in early March—which Trump had previously agreed to—remains their unified negotiating position.

Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi posted publicly that blockading Iranian ports "is an act of war and thus a violation of the ceasefire," and that striking a commercial vessel and taking its crew hostage "is an even greater violation." He added that Iran "knows how to neutralize restrictions, how to defend its interests, and how to resist bullying."
