Admiral Paparo Dismisses Canada Invasion Question—But Trump’s Rhetoric Keeps Escalating

The top U.S. military commander in the Indo-Pacific, Admiral Samuel Paparo, was asked a question that six months ago would have been unthinkable: what would he do if President Trump ordered an invasion of Canada? Speaking at the Indo-Pacific Defense Conference in British Columbia alongside his Canadian counterpart, Paparo initially laughed it off, comparing the scenario to an attack from Martians. But when pressed by a reporter who noted that Trump talks about annexation daily, Paparo’s answer became more revealing—and more uncomfortable.

“I follow the orders of the commander in chief,” Paparo said, before adding that the premise was “absolutely preposterous.” He called it a “needlessly emotional question” and insisted that Canada is a close ally.
