What the US Embassy Alleged

The fact sheet cited two main examples of alleged interference. First, it pointed to Canadian Minister Melanie Joly, who met with Democratic officials in Boston and Chicago in September 2026 and reportedly stated that Canada would impose targeted tariffs if Democrats win in key states. Second, it noted that Joly said on August 25, 2026, that Canada would target products from specific US states "for maximum political pressure."

The document framed these actions as improper meddling in American electoral politics. But critics across the Canadian political spectrum saw it differently — as the Trump administration trying to punish Canada for defending itself against tariffs that Washington started.
