The United States is hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping for a state visit, and the contrast between the two leaders could not be starker. During a White House walkthrough, Donald Trump shows Xi his "Presidential Walk of Fame" — a display mocking former American presidents. Xi's response is not laughter but a lecture on the "Thucydides trap," the ancient Greek concept that a declining power often starts wars with a rising one, to everyone's detriment. Xi invokes the Peloponnesian War, where Sparta temporarily defeated Athens but ultimately degraded itself. Meanwhile, Trump reportedly tells aides that Xi "looks vibrant," "strong," "fit," and "better than ever" — and that "he's an expert on stones" and "loves good granite." The segment captures the surreal dynamic of a superpower fawning over its strategic rival while the rival calmly explains why the U.S. is losing.
