Medical Marijuana Moves to Schedule III

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche signed an order reclassifying FDA-approved marijuana products and state-licensed medical marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III under DEA guidelines. Schedule I drugs like heroin, ecstasy, and LSD have no accepted medical use and high abuse potential; Schedule III drugs like Tylenol with codeine or ketamine carry moderate to low dependence risk. This eases federal restrictions on research without legalizing marijuana, which requires congressional action.

White House Domestic Policy Council Deputy Director Heidi Overton explained the shift enables rigorous studies on safety, efficacy, and interactions with other medications, particularly for seniors—one in ten of whom used medical marijuana in the past year and reported benefits, though without scientific guidance. Acting AG Blanche noted it will expand patient access and inform doctors. A DEA hearing on June 29 will consider moving all cannabis to Schedule III. Currently, 40 states and D.C. allow medical use; 24 of those plus D.C. permit recreational use.
