“MK Confidential” returns right in the thick of a new case: New Year’s Eve, 2002. A young mother gets a phone call from her new boyfriend, who’s celebrating at the Eiffel Tower, on the other side of the world. She knows he is not in Paris, his very pregnant wife is missing, and the man at the end of the line is the chief suspect. Her name is Amber Frey, and she is recording his every word.
Megyn Kelly traces Scott and Amber’s relationship to November 2022, when Scott charms a colleague at a work conference, and is set up on a blind date. Scott tells Amber he is single, and soon charms her, as well. Four weeks later, Laci Peterson vanishes. Within a week, Amber learns the truth about Scott, and goes to the police.
Amber agrees to record her phone calls with Scott, pretending to believe his stories about world travel as he calls her from the vigil for his missing wife. The conversations become invaluable as the days tick by, and Laci’s trail grows cold. By the time Laci’s body washes up on the shore of the San Francisco Bay, Scott Peterson has spent hours speaking into a microphone, as though nothing was wrong in his world. This is Episode 1 of the Laci Peterson story.
