On a sweltering July night in 2008, a woman named Kiomari Torres led Detective Yuri Melik into the woods behind Hidden Oaks Elementary School in Orlando. She and Casey Anthony used to ride their bikes here as girls, carrying blankets and toys, disappearing for hours where their mothers couldn't see them. It was their favorite hiding spot, a six-minute walk from the Anthony house. That night, they found nothing. Months later, on December 11, a meter reader named Roy Kronk returned to those same woods to relieve himself and found a child's skull at his feet. Caylee Anthony had been there the whole time, in her mother's favorite hiding spot.

The thirty-one days

The state's case against Casey Anthony began with a timeline. Prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick walked the jury through the thirty-one days after Caylee was last seen alive, asking the same question over and over: "Where is Caylee Marie Anthony?" She gave the jury a rule for understanding Casey: when her back is against the wall and the stakes increase, she comes up with a bigger, better lie. The biggest lie was a babysitter named Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez, whom Casey had described to her family for two years and who did not exist.

Show Notes

"MK Confidential" follows the case to trial. In her opening statement, prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick doesn't start with chloroform or duct tape. She begins with the story of a little girl, walking the jury through every day of Caylee's short life before landing on the thirty-one days no one reported her missing. Defense attorney Jose Baez fires back with a name the prosecution never said out loud: Roy Kronk, the meter reader who found Caylee's skull.

Megyn sifts through the physical evidence piece by piece. A trunk that smelled like nothing to Casey's boyfriend— but smells like “death” to a tow-yard owner three weeks later, a hair traced back to someone from Caylee's maternal line inside that trunk, and an online search about how to make chloroform. Meanwhile, three medical examiners looking at the same skull, are unable to agree on whether that tape held Caylee's jaw in place or was never holding anything at all.

By the time the state rests, it has built a case on a mother's lies stacked one on top of another — leaving the defense one afternoon to explain them away. This is Episode 3 of the Casey Anthony story.
