These trends began well before smartphones or the internet. Robert Putnam documented the early stages in Bowling Alone using data from the 1970s through the 1990s. Even then, Americans were already becoming dramatically less likely to host people, attend church, or involve themselves in social activities. The new data from Data for Progress, which replicated those earlier methodologies, shows the trajectory has continued and accelerated. We are now at a point that is unprecedented in human history.
