In early 1919, Berliners walked past smoldering ruins to vote in the first national elections of the new German Republic. The rubble was the aftermath of a failed communist uprising, crushed by volunteer nationalist militias called the Freikorps. The most visible leaders of the rebellion, Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg, had been captured and murdered on the orders of a Freikorps captain. Their bodies were disposed of in a river. Most Germans considered the insurgents traitors, but the brutal, extrajudicial killing of a woman unsettled even some conservatives. This episode of The Martyr Made Podcast traces the violent, chaotic months that followed, examining how the trauma of defeat, the threat of Bolshevik revolution, and the rise of the Freikorps created a generation of men who could not return to civilian life and who would carry their brutalized worldview into the next war.

Show Notes

Millions of German soldiers returned from the front to find their country riven by civil war, and beset by enemies on all sides. Bolshevism was pouring out of the borders of Russia into Central and Eastern Europe with indiscriminate savagery for which even four years in the trenches had not prepared them. The fighting men of Germany, enraged by betrayal and humiliation, were only too happy to meet the Communists on their own terms.
