The Voice That Speaks When You Aim Wrong

In a lecture drawn from his tour for We Who Wrestle with God, Jordan Peterson opened with a striking claim: every glance, every word, every action is a directional choice, and every directional choice is an ethical one. There is no perception without action, no action without decision, and no decision without morality. The world reveals itself at the level of fact in accordance with your intent. If that is true, Peterson argued, it should terrify you — because it means that how you look at things determines what you see, and what you see determines where you end up.

Aim and the Architecture of Perception

Peterson began by dismantling the idea that perception is passive. Drawing on a century of physiology, he noted that there is no base level of seeing independent of action. When you look at an audience, you look with intent — either to glorify yourself (which produces self-consciousness and misery) or to say something true. Those are not neutral differences. They shape every gesture, every micro-expression, every choice of where to point your eyes. On a date, the intent behind your gaze is something the other person reads instantly. The eyes evolved to be maximally visible — white sclera, dark iris — precisely so that others can see where you are looking and infer what you are up to.
