The first time Brian Simpson filmed a comedy special, he did it live. Not because it was easier, but because he wanted to know what it felt like. "That scares the shit out of me," he told Joe Rogan. "That's why I did it." The admission captures something about Simpson's approach to both comedy and life: he runs toward the thing that makes him uncomfortable, then figures out how to survive it.

The Craft of Capturing Comedy

Simpson's new special, Live from the Mothership, is now available on YouTube, and he already knows it contains one of his best bits—a piece of material with "a great arc" and enough detail that it "comes back around." But he also knows that even a great special captures only sixty to seventy percent of what it feels like to be in the room. The cameras change everything. The awareness that you have to nail it changes everything.

Rogan advised Simpson to film four shows if possible, so that once you have one in the can, you're free. "Then it's all a regular show now," Simpson agreed. The alternative—shooting a single performance, as Bill Hicks did for Relentless—produces a different energy. You can feel Hicks's tension in that London theater, Rogan noted. "It doesn't feel like loose, like relaxed. It feels like he's very aware he's being filmed."
