Chase Hughes spent five and a half hours on an intravenous DMT pump that allowed him to adjust his "altitude" in real time—going higher or lower as he chose. He described it as "the highest you can feel on DMT, like the most you can see on DMT, but it's five and a half hours of that." At one point he asked if he was dead thirty-nine times, not because he was concerned about the answer, but simply because the question arose naturally. Coming back, he was crying, overwhelmed by the sense that he had to "wrap myself in some kind of ego in order to just return back here." He called it "Avatar Depression times a million."
The Dream Argument for Reality's Structure
Hughes offered a thought experiment to reframe how we understand perception. If you're in a dream and someone asks how far away a UFO is, you'd say eight feet. If they ask what it's made of, you'd say aluminum—but there's no aluminum in your brain. The distance, the material, the eyeballs you're seeing through, the photons that don't exist—all of it is "made out of consciousness." The eight feet of distance is zero. "You realize that the distance between you and that thing is A, made up of consciousness, and B doesn't exist."
