The Construct and the Crisis: Eric Weinstein on Physics, Power, and the Epstein Puzzle

Eric Weinstein arrived at the JRE studio with a confession: he had just given a talk on dark energy at the University of Texas at Austin Physics Department, but he wasn't allowed to say so publicly. "I've been lying my whole life about my relationship with the physics world because of this pressure," he told Joe Rogan. "They can't listen to me if I say I'm a physicist, so I say I'm an entertainer."

This is the central tension of Weinstein's life. He holds a Harvard PhD, an MIT postdoc, and an NSF fellowship. He has worked in math, physics, and economics departments. And yet, when he visits physics institutions, he is told he cannot say he gave a talk. He cannot say he visited. He cannot say he gave a nine-hour seminar. "I don't want to die," he said. "I don't want to lose my ability to enter a physics department."

The String Theory Implosion

The root of the problem, according to Weinstein, is what happened to theoretical physics starting in 1984. That year, a result called Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation convinced the field's most brilliant figure, Edward Witten, that everyone should pile into one narrow subspecialty: string theory. "Because he was so much smarter than all of us, people listened," Weinstein said. "And I didn't."
