Jarecki's project began casually: reading a book on wrongful conviction with his 14-year-old daughter led to a road trip to Alabama, known for its troubled prisons. Posing as a volunteer chaplain's guest, he entered facilities like Holman (death row) and Easterling. Inmates pulled him aside during a filmed revival, warning of curated views and directing him to unmonitored dorms with killings, beatings, and years-long solitary. Kicked out after probing, Jarecki turned to contraband phones—sold by guards themselves—for raw footage of dorms, stabbings, and retaliation. One early tip: guard Rod Gadson beat inmate Stephen Davis, who died in hospital; Davis's mother, Sandy Ray, recorded calls exposing official lies about the incident.
