AI Summary
5 min readWhen someone insults you, the natural instinct is to fire back with a sharper comeback or a defensive retort. But Jefferson Fisher, a trial attorney who has spent years questioning witnesses in depositions and cross-examinations, argues that the opposite move is far more powerful: ask a question. The best communicators, he says, are not the ones with the best answers but the ones who ask the best questions—because a response gives the other person something to fight against, while a question forces them to answer for themselves.
The Core Mechanism: Questions Stop Emotional Flooding
The psychological insight at the heart of Fisher’s approach is simple but underappreciated: when people are emotionally flooded—angry, defensive, or insulting—their logical brain is offline. If you respond to an insult with a counter-insult or a defense, you give them something to push against, which keeps the emotional spiral spinning. But if you ask a calm, logical question, their brain has to toggle into analytical mode. They have to pause, think, and retrieve information. “It’s hard for people when they’re emotionally flooded to answer logical questions,” Fisher explains. A question like “How so?” can short-circuit a heated exchange because the other person suddenly has to explain themselves rather than escalate.

Show Notes
The best communicators are not the ones with the fastest comeback. They are the ones who know which question to ask. In this episode, I break down how to ask better questions when someone is insulting, pushing against you, or trying to pull you into an argument.
I will show you how to use clarifying questions to slow a conversation down, questions of intent to put the focus back where it belongs, and no-oriented questions to make a request without creating more resistance. You will learn how to stop giving people something to fight against and start asking questions that lead to clearer, calmer conversations.
