The Difference Between Honoring and Enabling

Ramsey immediately reframes the tension. Honoring a parent, he argues, does not mean condoning every behavior. He draws a parallel to the biblical instruction to pray for political leaders—you can honor the office without endorsing the person’s actions. “God’s not asking me to honor that misbehavior,” Ramsey says, “but I can honor the office of fatherhood.” David’s father signed a deal, and now he wants to break it. That is a misbehavior, not a failure of David to be a good son. Ramsey is blunt: “It’s not your job biblically to make him happy. He gave his word to something, you have prospered the business with almost no involvement of his, for which he’s getting one million two hundred thousand dollars. If my son did that, I would say thank you.”
