5 min readWhen Growth Exposes Weakness: A CFO’s Cash Flow Crisis
An engineering firm with 25 employees and $11 million in annual revenue is struggling to make payroll and pay vendors. The CFO, Janet, calls in knowing something is wrong but unsure how to isolate the root cause. Dave Ramsey walks her through the distinction between a cash flow problem and a profitability problem—and why the two often get confused when a business has been growing fast.

Ramsey immediately presses on accounts receivable: the firm carries $1.5 to $2 million in receivables, with large manufacturing customers paying in 60 to 90 days. The median is 50 days.
“The first place I go to to figure out a cash flow problem is you’re not getting paid what’s owed to you on time,” Ramsey says. “If you got the money every month within ten days of when it was owed, you wouldn’t have a cash flow problem. Most of the time.”
