How to Master the Art of Persuasion & Scale Your Vision | Ed Mylett

5 min readEd Mylett opens this episode with a direct claim: the single most important skill for any entrepreneur—or any person who wants to build something—is the ability to persuade and influence others. He argues that without this skill, wealth, leadership, and scale are essentially impossible. The episode then unfolds as a layered exploration of what influence actually is, drawing on Mylett’s own frameworks and conversations with three guests: leadership expert John C. Maxwell, Yale professor Zoe Chance, and real estate mogul Mauricio Umansky. The through-line is that influence is not manipulation or transaction; it is the transfer of energy, belief, and genuine service.
Influence as Energy Transfer and Belief
Mylett’s central thesis is that influence is fundamentally an energy transfer. You cannot move someone to action unless you are genuinely experiencing the belief you are trying to transmit. “You can’t transfer to me that which you’re not experiencing yourself,” he says. This means the first work of persuasion is internal: feeding your own belief through research, third-party validation, and constant mental rehearsal. He compares this to bees choosing which flower to pollinate based on the energy the flower emits—people, he argues, do the same. If you want clients, employees, or partners to “pollinate” your business, you must radiate a conviction that is palpable.

Show Notes
If I could only keep one skill out of everything I've built, this is the one.
I get asked all the time what skill matters most for an entrepreneur, and my answer never changes: the ability to persuade. Without it, most of what I have doesn't exist. And here's the hard truth I open this episode with. Most people are nowhere near as persuasive as they believe they are, and that belief is the very thing keeping them stuck.
So I brought together three of the most influential people I've ever sat across from. John Maxwell has trained leaders in every country on earth and sold more than 30 million books. Zoe Chance teaches one of the most popular courses at the Yale School of Management. Mauricio Umansky built The Agency into one of the biggest real estate brands on the planet, starting at the worst possible moment to start anything.I push each of them on the things most people never talk about.
I get honest with John about a part of leadership where I've always felt limited. I admit to Zoe the surprisingly small thing I'm still afraid to ask for. And I press Mo on what really happened before The Agency existed, a story I was surprised he was willing to tell.
I also lay out my own playbook: why energy moves people more than words, why you have to sell a dream big enough for everyone around you to fit inside, and a lesson my dad taught me as a kid that every closer needs to hear.
Here's what you'll gain from this episode:
- The Question That Changes Everything: The one question Zoe teaches that opens doors you didn't know existed, and what happened when I asked it of myself.
- Your Sweet Spot: How John realized he was in the wrong role for years, and how to find where you win.
- The Emotional Moment: How Mo reads a room before a deal, and the one mistake that destroys the connection.
- Rejection as Training: Why you should be hearing no a lot more often, and how to make it hurt less.
- Scaling Your Influence: How to transfer the skill of persuasion to your team so it grows beyond you.
Everything you want is on the other side of someone saying yes: your business, your family, your team, even the person in the mirror. Stop checking the box like you've already mastered this and go get better at it.
