The Biology of Venom

Venom is used to digest food, and deploying it on a creature the snake can't eat is wasteful. Worldwide, there are over 3,000 snake species, roughly 600 of which are venomous, and only about 200 can kill a human. In the United States, nearly all dangerous snakes fall into two categories: coral snakes (with their distinctive red, yellow, and black bands) and pit vipers—rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths.
