"I Just Discovered My Husband's Affair"

A caller named Evangeline tells Dr. John Delony that she discovered her husband's affair one week after their first anniversary. She had suspected something was wrong, found his phone locked (which it had never been before), and eventually placed an audio recording device in their car. She heard him telling another woman "I love you," using pet names, and planning weekend trips to Mexico. When she confronted him, he initially downplayed it, then admitted it, and now says he wants to change and be forgiven. But he won't let her see his phone, and he told her, "How long are you going to make me pay for this?" just two days after she found out.

The Foundation Problem

Delony's central argument is that rebuilding after infidelity requires a foundation of safety and trust, and that foundation cannot exist without total honesty. He tells Evangeline bluntly: "You can't rebuild anything because it's gotta be rebuilt on a foundation of safety and trust. And if you don't have that..." When she says she doesn't think she'll ever get the full truth, he agrees that the marriage as she knew it is over. "This marriage is over. We might can build another one, but this thing doesn't exist. And in fact, if I look with clarity to the past, it's never existed."
